Paula Deen goes Vegan Praline French Toast

Yes, I admit that I watch the food network and probably way too much tv in general. I saw Paula Deen make a really rich praline french toast. I went on-line, got the recipe and decided this would be a great recipe to make vegan. Lots of brown sugar and margarine!! Hmm.. Brown sugar and margarine as Homer Simpson would say. I told you I watch way too much tv. Here is my vegan version of the recipe.

Paula Deen goes Vegan Praline French Toast

1 loaf italian or french bread cut into thick slices
(this part adapted from Vegan with a Vengeance)
3/4 c. Silk creamer
3/4 c. soy milk
3 Tbs. cornstarch
6 Tbs. chickpea flour
1 tsp vanilla
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg

Place the bread slices in a large (10"x14") shallow casserole dish and spoon the french toast mixture over the slices making sure to get all of the slices coated. Let this sit for about 10 minutes while you make the praline topping as follows.

1/2 stick vegan margarine, melted
1/2 cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons corn or rice syrup
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg

Mix all the praline topping ingredients together and spread it on top of the french toast.
Bake at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes. Top with maple syrup. Enjoy.

Your not the only Food Network addict! I saw that show and was drooling over the baked french toast! Glad you found a way to veganize it! Oh yeah fat pants here we come.....

Thanks so much for the great comments.
susanv - I know what you mean by being tempting. I made a huge recipe and had lots left over to tempt me for many days.

jane m - so cool that you saw the same show. Chris suggested next time we put an apple filling between the layers of the bread, so sort of an apple stuffed praline french toast. Yummy!

There have actually been a couple Paula Dean recipes I've been meaning to make vegan sometime. I really love Paula Dean. (Yeah, I know . . . ) Looks good.

DANG! I am definitely going to try that!! I am a french toast maniac. For many years as a vegan, I lived without - but now there are so many delicious recipes to choose from. Yum Yum.

I also enjoy veganizing from the Food Network - like Jacques Pepin's plum cake and the Barefoot Contessa's thumbprint coconut cookies. :)

It's crazy, I keep the food network on as background alot. My last boyfriend said I was obsessed. It just grosses me out when they show raw meat. But I always take note of how to make something veggie! The french toast sounds amazing!

When I watch Paula Dean it's sometimes more like a comedy because I laugh at how much butter, pork fat, etc. she puts in everything. But she does have that soothing southern voice...

And there's so much non-vegan stuff on the Food Network in general, but it's entertainment and we do get ideas from watching every so often.

that just looks incredible. I've never heard of Paula Dean (I get the Food Network, but only the Canadian edition). I'm going to make that Fronch Toast and give YOU all the credit!

PS-- did you know Paula Deen was a hermit for a long time? She had an anxiety disorder that made her stay in the house for weeks at a time...
